Martinique
Martinique extends from the urban area of Fort-de-France and the neighbouring communes of Le Lamentin and Schoelcher to the northern volcanic massif around Mount Pelée, which reaches 1,397 metres. The island’s northern landscape includes the town of Saint-Pierre, while the southern coast contains places such as Le Marin, Sainte-Anne and Les Trois-Îlets. The Lézarde River, Martinique’s longest river, flows through the central part of the island before reaching the Atlantic coast.
The island’s administrative structure includes 34 communes and two arrondissements centred on Fort-de-France and La Trinité. Martinique is divided by the Pitons du Carbet and other mountainous areas between the wetter north and the comparatively drier south; its area is recorded as 1,128,000,000 square metres. The population declined from 383,806 in 2014 to 360,630 in 2023 according to the supplied regional figures.
