The state was founded in 1788 and extends from the coastal cities along Long Island Sound to the Berkshire foothills in the northwest. The Connecticut River crosses the state from north to south, while Hartford, New Haven, Stamford and Bridgeport are among its principal urban centres. Mapped long-distance cycling routes include the East Coast Greenway and the Litchfield Community Greenway.
The South Central Connecticut Planning Region is a Connecticut planning region with 570,487 residents. New Haven is its principal city, located on the northern shore of Long Island Sound at the mouth of the West River.
The region includes urban places such as Hamden, North Haven, Milford and Wallingford. New Haven is known for Yale University and the New Haven Green, a historic central square bordered by colonial-era churches and civic buildings.
The Greater Bridgeport Planning Region has 325,778 residents and centres on Bridgeport, Connecticut’s largest city by population. Bridgeport lies on Long Island Sound and contains a major harbour at the mouth of the Pequonnock River.
Other municipalities include Fairfield, Stratford and Trumbull, while the Housatonic River forms an important geographic feature near Stratford and Milford. Bridgeport is associated with the Barnum Museum, founded in 1893 and dedicated to the city’s connection with showman P. T. Barnum.
The Western Connecticut Planning Region has 620,549 residents and includes the cities of Stamford, Norwalk and Danbury. Stamford stands on Long Island Sound near the New York state line, while Danbury lies inland in the Still River valley.
Greenwich, Westport and Ridgefield are among the region’s recognised communities, and the Norwalk River reaches Long Island Sound at Norwalk. The western edge of Connecticut is connected directly with Westchester County, New York, making Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway important transport corridors.
The Northwest Hills Planning Region has 112,503 residents and covers much of the rural upland area associated with Litchfield County. Torrington is the largest city in the region, while Litchfield village is known for its historic town green and courthouse district.
The Housatonic River runs through the western part of the region, and the Appalachian Trail crosses northwestern Connecticut near Salisbury and Kent. The Litchfield Community Greenway is a documented cycling route in this planning region.
The Naugatuck Valley Planning Region has 450,376 residents and follows the industrial corridor of the Naugatuck River. Waterbury is its principal city, with Naugatuck, Ansonia, Derby and Seymour among the other communities along or near the river.
The Naugatuck River flows south from the Torrington area to its confluence with the Housatonic River at Derby. Waterbury’s Mattatuck Museum documents the history of the Naugatuck Valley, including its long connection with brass manufacturing.

The Lower Connecticut River Valley Planning Region has 174,225 residents and follows the Connecticut River toward Long Island Sound. Middletown is the largest inland city, while Old Saybrook, Essex and Deep River occupy the river’s lower estuary and adjacent shoreline.
The Connecticut River reaches Long Island Sound at Old Saybrook, where the mouth is bordered by coastal marshes and the historic Saybrook Point area. Essex is known for its preserved nineteenth-century village centre, and Gillette Castle stands above the river in East Haddam.
To the mapThe Southeastern Connecticut Planning Region has 280,430 residents and includes New London, Norwich and Groton. New London stands on the Thames River estuary, while Norwich lies farther inland at the confluence of the Yantic, Shetucket and Quinebaug rivers.
Groton is home to the United States Navy Submarine Base New London and the Submarine Force Library and Museum. Mystic, located in Stonington and Groton, contains the Mystic Seaport Museum and the historic Bascule Drawbridge over the Mystic River.
The Northeastern Connecticut Planning Region has 95,348 residents and includes the rural northeastern corner of the state. Putnam, Danielson and Willimantic are established towns in the region, with Willimantic located along the Willimantic River.
The Quinebaug River flows through northeastern Connecticut toward the Thames River basin, and the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor covers parts of this landscape. The region borders Massachusetts to the north and Rhode Island to the east.
The Capitol Planning Region has 976,248 residents and centres on Hartford, Connecticut’s capital city. Hartford stands on the Connecticut River and contains the Connecticut State Capitol in Bushnell Park, a High Victorian Gothic building completed in 1878.
The region also includes West Hartford, East Hartford, New Britain and Manchester. The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, founded in 1842, is the oldest continuously operating public art museum in the United States.
