Hawaii was established as a U.S. state in 1959 and had about 1,455,271 inhabitants in 2020, compared with 1,360,301 in 2010. The state extends across the central Pacific and includes the islands of Hawaiʻi, Maui, Oʻahu, Kauaʻi and Molokaʻi. Its five counties are Kauaʻi County, Maui County, Hawaiʻi County, Kalawao County and Honolulu County.

Kauaʻi County covers approximately 3,280 square kilometres and had 73,298 inhabitants. The county includes the island of Kauaʻi, whose main population centre is Līhuʻe, as well as towns such as Kapaʻa, Hanalei and Waimea.
The Wailua River flows through the eastern part of the island, while Waimea Canyon and the Nā Pali Coast form two of Kauaʻi’s best-known landscapes. The northwest of the island belongs to the natural area of the Nā Pali Coast, with steep valleys and sea cliffs along the Pacific coast.

Maui County covers approximately 6,213 square kilometres and had 164,754 inhabitants. It includes Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi and the uninhabited island of Kahoʻolawe, with Kahului, Wailuku, Lahaina and Hāna among the principal places on Maui.
The summit of Haleakalā rises to about 3,055 metres within Haleakalā National Park on eastern Maui. Maui County also contains the ʻIao Valley near Wailuku and the former whaling port of Lahaina on the west coast of Maui.

Hawaiʻi County covers approximately 13,174 square kilometres and had 200,629 inhabitants. It occupies the island of Hawaiʻi, also called the Big Island, and includes Hilo on the east coast, Kailua-Kona on the west coast, and communities such as Waimea and Pāhoa.
Mauna Kea reaches about 4,207 metres and is the highest mountain in the state, while Mauna Loa and Kīlauea are active volcanic mountains. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park surrounds major volcanic landscapes in the south and east of the island, and the Wailuku River passes through Hilo before reaching Hilo Bay.
To the mapKalawao County covers approximately 136 square kilometres and had 82 inhabitants. The county occupies the northern peninsula of Molokaʻi, where the settlement of Kalaupapa lies below the steep sea cliffs of the island’s north coast.
Kalaupapa was established in the 19th century as an isolated settlement for people with Hansen’s disease. The area is preserved as Kalaupapa National Historical Park, and the peninsula is separated from the rest of Molokaʻi by cliffs that rise sharply from the coastal plain.

Honolulu County covers approximately 5,509 square kilometres and had 1,016,508 inhabitants. It includes the island of Oʻahu and the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, with Honolulu serving as the capital of Hawaii and the county’s largest urban centre.
Honolulu lies on the southern coast of Oʻahu near Waikīkī, Diamond Head and Honolulu Harbor. Pearl Harbor is located west of the city and is associated with the attack of December 7, 1941; the harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial are among the best-known historic sites in the county.
