Tinian Municipality

Tinian Municipality is one of the four administrative divisions of the Northern Mariana Islands and has OSM administrative level 6. The island of Tinian lies south of Saipan and contains the settlement of San Jose, the municipality’s main populated area. Tinian is known for the North Field airfield, from which United States aircraft operated during the Second World War.

The island also contains the historic Atomic Bomb Pits at North Field, associated with the departure of the Enola Gay and Bockscar in August 1945. Tinian’s road network connects San Jose with the island’s central and northern areas, including former military installations and coastal locations.

Saipan Municipality

Saipan Municipality is an administrative level 6 municipality with 43,385 inhabitants and an area of approximately 115.38 square kilometres. Saipan is the largest population centre of the Northern Mariana Islands, with Garapan serving as a major urban district on the western coast. The island’s highest point is Mount Tapochau, which reaches 474 metres above sea level.

Important mapped places include Susupe, Chalan Kanoa, the American Memorial Park and Managaha Island west of Saipan. Saipan also contains Lake Susupe, a freshwater wetland near the west coast, while the northern part of the island includes World War II sites such as the Banzai Cliff and Suicide Cliff.

Northern Islands Municipality

Northern Islands Municipality is an administrative level 6 division covering the remote islands north of Saipan, including Pagan, Agrihan, Alamagan, Anatahan and Maug. The municipality has a recorded population of only 5 people, reflecting the limited permanent settlement across this island group. Several islands are volcanic, and Anatahan experienced a major eruption in 2003 that produced a new volcanic cone.

Agrihan is the highest island in the Northern Mariana Islands, rising to approximately 965 metres, while Pagan contains an active volcanic landscape with the Mount Pagan volcano. The islands are separated from Saipan by open Pacific waters, and their settlements and roads are considerably less developed than those of Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

Rota Municipality

Rota Municipality is an administrative level 6 municipality with 2,527 inhabitants and an area of approximately 83 square kilometres. The island lies between Tinian and Guam, and Songsong is the main settlement on the western side of Rota. The municipality’s recorded elevation is 496 metres, corresponding to the mountainous interior of the island.

Rota is known for limestone terrain, coastal cliffs and the Rota Resort area near Songsong. The island also contains the As Matmos wetland, a significant freshwater and coastal habitat, and the Rota Latte Stone Quarry, where traditional Chamorro latte stones were extracted.
