It runs in an east-west direction starting from Amelia Earhart Road and crosses North 13th Street, North 12th Street, North 11th Street, North 10th Street, North 9th Street, North 8th Street, North Broadway Street, Grant Avenue, North 7th Street, North 5th Street and Bundel Road. Metropolitan Avenue is also known as North 20 Street. This street is part of the highways 7, 73, 92 and Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Auto Tour Route.
